The Navy has honorably discharged Ensign Michael Izbicki, a native of San Clemente, ending a legal battle waged by Izbicki so he could leave the military as a conscientious objector. The Associated Press reports that 25-year-old Izbicki was attending the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut when he twice applied for discharge on the grounds his religious beliefs prevented him from committing violence. Izbicki was twice denied. Turns out the denial isn't exactly an anomaly in the military, according to the A.P.:
The American Civil Liberties Union handled the lawsuit for Izbicki, who agreed to drop the suit and reimburse the Naval Submarine School for his education after getting the honorable discharge.
Izbicki says he will return to California when he leaves Connecticut, but isn't sure what the future holds for him.
