Three NATO soldiers, one of them American, were killed Friday when a suicide car bomb hit their convoy near the Afghanistan capital city of Kabul.
NATO International Security Assistance Force reported on its Twitter feed that the three ISAF service members died following a suicide VBIED (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device) attack.
While it is the policy of NATO ISAF not to disclose the identities or nationalities of casualties, an unnamed senior military official told NBC News one of the three NATO military personnel was American.
Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai told the Los Angeles Times several Afghan civilians were also wounded in the attack:
“Today at around 1:00 p.m. a suicide car bomber using a Toyota Corolla targeted a foreign military convoy in Kabul’s 9th precinct, wounded more than seven civilians and destroyed a foreign military vehicle."
According to the New York Times, the explosion occurred in the eastern part of Kabul near the Camp Phoenix military base.
