Iwo Jima Flag Raising

Camp Pendleton artillery units will fire a ceremonial 21-gun salute on Saturday to commemorate the anniversary of the landings on Iwo Jima during World War II.

The salute will take place at the Pacific Views Event Center between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, according to a Marine Corps news release.

Folks who live as much as 50 miles away may be able to hear the sound of gunfire, depending on atmospheric conditions.

The Department of Defense estimates more than 6,800 Marines and sailors lost their lives during the Battle for Iwo Jima, which took place between February 19 and March 25, 1945.

The iconic image of five Marines and one Navy Corpsman raising the United States flag on Mt. Suribachi took place during the battle. You can watch video of the flag raising, courtesy of YouTube, posted up top.
