College Football Star Turned Soldier Killed In Afghanistan (Video)

Army Sgt. 1st Class Samuel C. Hairston, 35, was killed in Ghazni, Afghanistan on Aug. 12, when he was hit by small-arms fire during combat, according to the Department of Defense.

KPRC-TV reports Hairston attended the University of Houston, and was a defensive lineman for the school's football team from 1997 to 2000.

He joined the Army in 2003.

Green Beret Dies Of Gunshot Wound Suffered In Afghanistan

Army Sgt. 1st Class Andrew T. Weathers, 30, died Sept. 30 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from a gunshot wound suffered during combat in Helmand Province, Afghanistan on Sept. 28.

The Army Times reports Weathers was a Green Beret and Special Forces medical sergeant, assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

California Airman Dies In Germany

The Department of Defense has yet to release a cause of death for Staff Sgt. Nathan L. Tinsley, a 27-year-old airman from Eureka, California.

According to a news release from Ramstein Air Base, Tinsley died in a town called Schwedelbach just outside the base "at approximately 2:15 p.m. October 26."
